Six political parties had urged the CEC to remove Sono Khan for his alleged involvement in irregularities in electoral rolls. These parties had filed a written complaint against Sindh CEC in a letter sent to the Chief CEC, former Justice Fakhruddin G Ibrahim. The parties included Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), Sunni Tahreek, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F), JUI-P, and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
The JI also demanded verification of electoral rolls in Karachi under supervision of the Army along with the removal of provincial election commission staff. JI argued that it would be a futile exercise to conduct verification of the voter lists in the presence of the current staff.
